Arizona takes two of three from Pittsburgh, before Giants come to town

The current home stand has been so-so, for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but Wednesday aftenoon left the team with mixed emotions in an 11-1 thrashing of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon.

Zack Greinke was near perfect before coming out with two outs in the eighth inning due to some discomfort. "Zack was removed from the game because of some abdominal tightness. He is scheduled for an MRI on Friday," said manager Torey Lovullo. The D-back skipper liked what he saw prior to that moment in the eight. "Zack was moving in a really good direction. At points and time of the game, Butch and I were talking about the potential of a complete game. You don't see it a lot in the big leagues anymore, he was in a good spot, commanding the ball and getting very quick outs." Greinke said he noticed the pain on a pitch before he threw his last of the game, with a 2-2 count, and two outs in the eighth inning. "We'll find out in a couple days. Its not to bad, just didn't want to try and push it," said Greinke.

Lovullo said this about his afternoons offensive performance. "I thought we swung the bats extremely well. We had the home runs by Escobar, Swihart, and Jones. Really nice approaches all day long. I thought we let Archer pitch himself into some situations. We were patient, we had a good approach, we were just really good offensively."

Greinke improved to (6-1) on the season, and the D-backs gave him a little cushion in the bottom of the first. Ketel Marte singled in Jarrod Dyson for a quick 1-0 lead. Christian Walker put the ball in play to score Eduardo Escobar for a 2-0 advantage. Nick Ahmed's sacrifice fly scored Adam Jones for a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Eduardo Escobar hit his ninth homer over the right field fence, scoring Dyson ahead of him for a 5-0 lead. Adam Jones hit his ninth in the fifth to left field, to make it 6-0. In the eight, Eduardo Escobar doubled in Dyson. Blake Swihart followed with a shot off the right centerfield fence, for an inside the park home run, scoring Escobar as well, to increase the lead to 11-0.

Pittsburgh managed to spoil the shutout with a run in the ninth. Melky Cabrera singled in Starling Marte with two outs.

On Tuesday night, the D-backs bats were stymied by Joe Musgrove, who went seven innnigs allowing just one hit. Arizona did manage a home run by Carson Kelly in the eighth, and an RBI single by Adam Jones in a 6-2 loss.

Monday night the D-backs bats exploded for nine runs in a 9-3 win behind Robbie Ray. After a 1-3 series versus the Atlanta Braves, the D-backs will gladly take a 2-1 series win over the Pirates. After a day off the D-backs will host the final three games of this homestand against the San Francisco Giants.
