The Montezuma Federals take to the bases at Yavapai College's Roughrider Park today for Opening Day. Game starts at 4 PM.
A member of the Freedom Professional Baseball League, the Federals will face off against the San Rafael Pacifics. And just so you can get your fill of baseball, double headers are scheduled on both Saturday and Sunday; starting times at 12 and 4 pm.
Kids in Sports will be honored this weekend, and if they wear their team shirt, they'll get in to the game for free. Otherwise, tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for children, seniors and military.
The Federals are coached by Jack Wilson (not the previous mayor) a former shortstop for several National League teams. Wilson went to the All Star Game in 2004. Assistant Coach Dennis Tiefenthaler, was a stand-out player for Yavapai College before being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles. He played for several seasons in the minor leagues for the California Angels.
The San Rafael Pacifics are part of the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs, and hail from San Rafael in northern California. The Pacific Association also includes a team from Vallejo, and two teams in Hawaii.
Both the Freedom Pro League and the Pacific Association are independent professional leagues, but coaches and players are also scouted by Major League Baseball (MLB) teams.
Last year, the Montezuma Federals had a win/loss record of 29-30, behind only the Copper State Prospectors, who were the 2012 Freedom League Champions.
Brianna Smith, from Prescott, designed the mascot for the Federals.
