21 January 2013

Meyers And Petovello Each Tallied Three Points

Prescott Valley, AZ – The Arizona Sundogs edged out the Allen Americans Monday afternoon picking up the 3-2 win late in the final period at the Allen Event Center.

Arizona allowed Allen to go on an early power play after Cody Purves was called for cross checking, four seconds into the opening period, but successfully killed off the penalty.  The Sundogs scored first 4:26 into the first period, with a shot from Kevin Petovello and assists from Cody Purves and Ron Meyers. Two minutes later Meyers scored for the Sundogs with assists from Petovello and Purves. Tyler Ludwig was able to put the puck past Sundogs’ goalie David Brown while on the power play after Arizona’s Mike Glaicar was accessed two minutes for interference and closed Arizona’s lead heading into the first intermission.

The Americans were able to tie the game 4:41 into the second period with a goal from Anthony Maiani.  With 4:17 left in the second period Petovello and Mike Berube dropped their gloves and were both accessed a five minute fighting major. Sundogs’ netminder Brown made an incredible glove save in the second period as Maiani rushed down the ice on a breakaway but wasn’t quick enough to put the puck in the net.

Arizona was able to tally the game winning goal with 2:22 left in the final period, when Ron Meyers chipped the puck past Steve Silverthorn, giving Arizona the lead they needed for the win.  Meyers and Petovello both picked up three points in the game pushing the Sundogs to their second win against the Americans in their last three games.

Each team saw their share of the penalty box Monday afternoon with both teams serving a combined 22 offenses.  Brown took the win for the Sundogs making 20 saves.  Arizona outshot Allen 32-22.  The Sundogs were 0-5 on the power play and the Americans were 1-8 on the power play.  Meyers continues his point streak with four points in the past three games and Chad Nehring’s impressive 13 game point streak came to an end this afternoon in Allen.  The Sundogs will visit the BOK Center against the Tulsa Oilers tomorrow before returning home to host a two-game set with the Quad City Mallards.
