PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ – Craig Macdonald and Mike Gurtler each scored a pair of goals, but Kevin Petovelo buried the game-winner with 1:37 left to play as the Arizona Sundogs came back in the third period to top the Laredo Bucks by a 5-3 final on Saturday at Tim’s Toyota Center.
Petovello’s goal gave the Sundogs (12-17-6) their first and only lead of the hockey game. The Bucks (13-20-0) took a 3-2 lead early in the third period courtesy of Matt Boyd’s rebound goal, but after that Arizona responded with three unanswered tallies from Gurtler, Petovello, and an empty-netter by Macdonald in the final second.
After trailing 2-0 entering the second period, Arizona battled back to tie game as Macdonald scored a shorthanded goal after forcing a turnover in the left circle at 4:32. Gurtler then tied the game from the right side of the goal crease off JP Chabot’s centering pass with 1:03 left to play. The goal was Gurtler’s first since being acquired by the Sundogs from Missouri on December 31st.
In the opening period Laredo’s Erik Boisvert scored from the top of the crease six minutes in and Rusty Masters buried a rebound on the power play with 1:19 left in the frame.
Chabot finished with three assists on the night for Arizona. Kyle Hood assisted on Petovello’s game-winner. Gurtler tipped Tyler Butler’s shot from the blueline to tie the game in the third.
For the second straight night the Sundogs topped the 50-shot mark with 56 in the game. Scott Reid picked up the win with 26 saves. Torrie Jung suffered the loss despite 51-saves.
Both teams finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
The Sundogs enter the final week of their season-long, 10-game home stand on Wednesday when they host the Berry Conference leading Wichita Thunder at 7:05 PM MST.

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ – Two goals in the first 4:40 of period two was the difference on Friday night as the Arizona Sundogs prevailed over the Laredo Bucks in a 3-1 win at Tim’s Toyota Center.
Scott Reid stopped 32 shots to earn his ninth win of the season and give the Sundogs (11-17-6) sole possession of sixth place in the CHL’s Berry Conference.
After a scoreless first period, the Sundogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of period two. Kyle Hood buried a centering pass after Daymen Rycroft forced a turnover in the corner on the forecheck. The goal was Hood’s team-leading 12th of the season. Samson Mahbod added another for Arizona, scoring on his own rebound after driving the net down the middle of the ice.
Neil Trimm cut into the Sundogs’ lead with a wrist shot between the circles to finish off a 3-on-2 rush at 5:39 of the middle frame.
JP Chabot added the empty-netter with 55 seconds to play for his 12th goal of the year.
Torrie Jung took the loss for Laredo (13-19-0) despite a 54-save performance.
Both teams came up empty on the power play as Arizona went 0-for-2 and Laredo finished 0-for-3.
Arizona and Laredo conclude their two-game set on Saturday at 7:05 PM MST.
