NAZ Suns Drop Second Of A Back-To-Back To Hot Bighorns

28 January 2018

Xavier Silas led with 24 points in Suns’ 142-121 loss in Reno

RENO, Nev. – The Northern Arizona Suns had a tall task at hand, playing the second game of a back-to-back set on the road against one of the hottest teams in the NBA G League. The Suns made a rally in the third quarter to get it close, but ultimately ran out of gas, dropping a 142-121 final to the Reno Bighorns at the Reno Events Center Saturday night.

Xavier Silas led the Suns with 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Silas surpassed Andre Dawkins (359) for the ninth most made three-pointers in NBA G League history.

The Suns (13-17) shot a scorching 13-of-21 (.619) clip in the first quarter, but trailed 40-34 due to Reno’s eight offensive rebounds that led to 12 second chance points. The Bighorns (18-12), who entered the night averaging the second most rebounds per game in the league, dominated down low, winning the rebounding battle 57-39. Reno had 16 offensive rebounds leading to 33 second chance points. NAZ had just five second chance points on the night.

Reno used a big second quarter (15-of-25 shooting, zero turnovers) to lift their lead to 21 entering halftime. The Bighorns have now won 13 of their last 15 games after beginning the season 5-10. They are just a half-game back of the South Bay Lakers at the top of the Pacific Division.

Josh Gray continued his great week by recording 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting, six assists and two steals. This week Gray averaged 26.3 points, 7.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 3.3 steals.

Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson just missed out on tying his career-high of 20 points with a 19-point performance off the bench tonight. He made 5-of-6 from the field, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the free throw line to go with eight rebounds in 27 minutes of work.

Archie Goodwin earned his second consecutive start and tallied 18 points and eight rebounds. Danuel House returned to the team after playing with the Phoenix Suns last night to record 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting, three rebounds and three assists. Mike Young found his way back into double-digit scoring, notching 12 points and five rebounds in 21 minutes.

Individually, the Bighorns had big games across the board. David Stockton led Reno with 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting off the bench to go with four rebounds and four assists. Two Bighorns had double-doubles, as Jack Cooley recorded 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting and 16 rebounds (eight offensive), and Luis Montero had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

NAZ will play one more on the road before returning home for three games. The Suns play at the Lakers on Wednesday at 8 p.m. MT. Reno will host the Austin Spurs on Monday at 8 p.m. MT.
