Phoenix Suns Inter-squad Scrimmage Game Ends In Last Second Free Throws After Late Start

PRESCOTT VALLEY- A packed Prescott Valley Event Center on Friday, September 29th, anxiously waited for basketball to return in the form of a Phoenix Suns inter-squad scrimmage game. One problem, the Suns' bus broke on the way from Flagstaff as the team arrived late and pushed the start time back an hour.

“We wanted to make a fashionable entrance so we came a little bit late,” joked Phoenix Suns head coach Earl Watson. “The fans, they stayed and supported us, they did a great job.”

Once the action did begin, a show was put on for the fans as Suns’ stars Devin Booker, Eric Bledsoe, and 2017 first round pick Josh Jackson took the floor along with former Northern Arizona Suns players Elijah Millsap and Derrick Jones Jr, just to name a few. The entire Suns’ training camp roster was separated into two teams to compete in four shortened quarters.

TJ Warren paced the white team with 17 points and Devin Booker added 15 points, while Jackson lead the black team with 14 points and Alex Len, who recently signed a qualifying offer, accumulated 10 points as the Black team edged out the White team 52-51 on last second free-throws by Len.

“We did really good today, had a lot of fun,” Jackson said. “I know guys are really tired but I was just impressed (that) everybody came out and gave their all.”

Even though the contest was just a pre-season scrimmage game, the players went out and desperately tried to win the game for their side.

“Nobody wants to lose that,” Jones Jr. said. “Everybody went out there and gave it their all so that we can get that win.”

Along with the show put on by both teams, the scrimmage gave the chance for NAZ Suns fans to see Millsap and Jones Jr. return to the court they spent a lot of time on in the inaugural season of the Suns’ Gatorade League team.

“I loved every second I was playing in the D-League (now G-League),” Jones Jr. said. “It’s always going to be great coming back to here to play in front of these fans. I hold them dear to my heart because I came down here and they embraced me with open arms.”

The Phoenix Suns will be back in action, this time together as one team, as preseason competition begins Tuesday, October 3rd, on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers at 7:00 pm.

Meanwhile, the Northern Arizona Suns begin their second season at home on Saturday, November 4th, at 7:00 pm against the Agua Caliente Clippers.
