Badgers Home Opener at Ken Lindley Field Tonight
Featured

30 August 2019

Large crowd expected downtown

Canyon del Oro Dorados (1-0) at Prescott Badgers (0-1), 7pm

It does not get any easier for the Prescott Badgers this week, when they host the Canyon del Oro Dorados, at Ken Lindley Field aka (City Park) tonight at 7pm. The football field at Prescott High School is getting a complete makeover, forcing the Badgers to go into the Way-Back Machine to play at "City Park" for the first time since 1967. (There will be a shuttle bus from Yavapai College.)

The Dorados blew out Flowing Wells 59-0, leading 24-0 after the first quarter. The Badgers had a tough order last week in a 34-24 loss at Desert Edge.

Canyon del Oro has a powerful ground game that accounted for 289 yards and 8 touchdowns last week. Gavin Davis rushed for 135 yards and 5 touchdowns, while averaging over 10 yards a carry. Jared Vasquez runs the offense. Vasquez rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown, but only completed 1-4 for 35 yards.

The Badgers were led defensively by Sam Giordan and Rhett Pearce.  The two seniors combined for 22 tackles at Desert Edge last week. Aaron Greene had six tackles including a sack. Clay Gross was solid kicking last week, making all of his kicks, including a 25 yard field goal.

The Dorados will run, run, run. The Badgers will mix things up more. The key of the game is whether Prescott can slow down that impressive running game by Canyon del Oro. The Prescott offense showed some good stuff last week, and the ability to score. Look for a game like the Badgers played last week, as opposed to the route by the Dorados over Flowing Wells.

Parking will be a major issue in the area. To alleviate some of this, buses will transport fans from Yavapai College to and from the game. Look for temps to be around 84* with a breeze, for kickoff at 7pm.

Shadow Mountain Matadors 0-0) at Bradshaw Mountain Bears (0-1), 7pm

This will be the first game for the Shadow Mountain Matadors this season after a (4-6) record in 2018.

Three of the four Matador quarterbacks last season graduated, leaving sophomore Christian Thomson as a light experienced signal caller. Martin Vaughn was third in rushing as a sophomore on the squad last season with 467 yards and 3 touchdowns. Two receivers to watch are junior Elijah Cole and Vaughn swinging out of the backfield.

The Bradshaw Mountain Bears suffered a tough loss last week in their season home opener. Estrella Foothills came back with two fourth quarter touchdowns to win 33-26.

Josh Grant had a pretty good start at quarterback, but it faded some in the end. Titus King was the workhorse in the backfield, and look for a big game from him tonight.

This is a good matchup for Bradshaw Mountain, and should be a feel good game for the Bears, to help get the taste out of their mouths from last week.

Chino Valley Cougars (0-1) vs. Valley Christian Trojans (1-0), Saturday, 1pm at NAU Walkup Skydome

Valley Christian knocked off Scottsdale Christian Academy 43-0, while the Cougars fell 30-23 at home to Parker.

The Trojans are led by Vinnie LaGatta who completed 9-14 for 190 yards and 3 touchdowns. VC rushed for 229 yards as a team, with Kaden Majercak leading the way with 90 yards, that included a 67 yard touchdown. Seven different receivers caught passes, led by Andrew Hanzel 72 yards and one touchdown.

Chino Valley led in the first half of their game, but was unable to make the needed plays in the second half.

The Cougars will return home next Friday as they will host Tuba City at 7pm.
