Carter John and David Massis combined for 35 points to lead the Bradshaw Mountain Bears to a 53-44 win over the Prescott Badgers on Saturday at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Korey Schwartz led all scorers with 19 points and was the only Badger to score in double figures.
The game started off slow offensively for both teams, but the Bears would build a 9-5 lead on an inside jumper at the first quarter buzzer by Nathan Summit.
Bradshaw Mountain's lead grew to 18-8 before Sam Yeager nailed a three pointer to make the score 18-11 with 3:44 in the second quarter.
David Massis drove through the lane throwing up a shot that went in. A foul was called and a couple words said resulting in a Prescott Badger technical foul. Massis made the free throw, and two more for the technical. Bradshaw added another basket after being awarded possession, pushing the Bears lead up seven points, and a 25-11 lead.
Badger coach Travis Stedman said, "Once again we gave away a seven point possession. That really hurts us to give away points like that. Especially in big games."
Prescott battled back to trim the deficit as Dellin Boyd drove to the basket for a layup. Then Boyd stole the inbounds pass, getting fouled, then sinking a pair at the line, and suddenly it was 27-19 with :31 left in the first half.
The Badgers had one final opportunity to cut the deficit, but missed a pair of free throws, leaving Bradshaw Mountain with an eight point halftime lead.
In the third, Korey Schwartz knocked down a pair of baskets to trim the Bears lead to 31-25. Aydan McKenna pulled up in the paint, knocking down the shot, and the Badgers were within four at 31-27 with 5:11 on the third quarter clock.
Bradshaw Mountain called a timeout, which reset the Bears. Nathan Summit banked in a shot, stopping the Prescott run. Down by ten, a Milap Owens steal and basket trimmed the deficit to 39-32 at 1:39 in the third.
The Bears held the ball the last :41 getting a basket with :05 left. Prescott hustled the ball up court, getting the ball to Dellin Boyd who layed it in as the third quarter ended.
Bradshaw Mountain led 43-36 to start the final eight minutes.
The Bears held the ball the first minute before turning it over. A fast break reverse layup the other way by Jason Parent pulled the Badgers to within 43-38 with 6:44 left.
Once again the Bears killed some clock, but turned it over again on an offensive foul with 4:32 remaining.
Korey Schwartz pulled down another rebound, putting the ball in the hoop and the Bears lead was only 43-41 with 3:04 left. Once again, Bradshaw Mountain used a timeout, which settled down the Bears. By the time the Badgers would score again, it would be nearly three minutes later with the game out of reach.
Prescott suffered a defensive breakdown, leading to an easy basket, and it was 45-41 2:27. David Massis drove down the center of the lane again to increase the Bears lead to 47-41.
The Badgers had their chances, but could not get the shots to fall down the stretch. Schwartz finally ended the drought by hitting a three with just :08 left, but the Bears still led 51-44.
Coach Travis Stedman said, "We just had key mental breakdowns that affected us. We have to play smarter than that." In regards to the way the game played out, "We basically knew what their game plan was, but failed to make the adjustments on the court."
Prescott will travel for their final game of the season, as they face the Mohave Thunderbirds on Tuesday at 7pm. Bradshaw Mountain will hit the road as well, playing a non-region game at Desert Edge in Goodyear. The Bears will then set their sites on finding out where they will play in this years Division 4A playoffs.
