Prescott defense shuts down Combs offense

After a very tough loss at home last week, the Prescott Badgers needed to get a good game under their belt. Friday night the Badgers got just what they needed with a 49-6 win over the Combs Coyotes at San Tan Valley.

Things did not start off very good for the Badgers. The Prescott offense was moving the ball down the field on their first possession, but the drive took a bad turn as Nicholas Howland stepped in front of a Badger receiver, taking an Austin Clark pass at the Combs 10 yard line the other way on a 90 yard pick six.

Prescott failed to score on their next possession as a 32 yard field goal attempt was deflected at the line of scrimmage.

The Badgers went to work from there and scored the next seven touchdowns. The first came on the opening play of the second quarter when Sam Giordan went straight up the gut of the Coyotes defense on an inside reverse from 5 yards out. Levi Habecker added the PAT and the Prescott 7-6.

Quarterback Austin Clark called his own number on a QB sneak from 2 yards out and the lead grew to 14-6. The final score of the half came when Clark hit Giovanni Ruiz on a 15 yard pass play with :20 left in the first half, giving the Badgers a 21-6 lead at the half.

Ryan Greene, who rushed for 201 yards, got into the scoring column in the third quarter with back to back rushing touchdowns. The first came on a 43 yard run after the Prescott defense held Combs on a fourth down play. The second came on a 63 yard burst with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter, increasing the Badger lead to 35-6.

John Chaffeur stepped in front of a Coyote receiver and picked up a pick six from 9 yards out to highlight the fourth quarter. The final score came on a 3 yard quarterback keeper by backup QB Aaron Greene. Levi Habecker, who was a perfect seven for seven on the night, added the final point.

The Badger defense played lights out all night. The final play seemed fitting as Joseph Perez sacked Combs quarterback Junior Loggins as time ran out. The Prescott defense finished with three sacks, two fumble recoveries, and one pass interception.

Badger Coach Michael Gilpin said, "We got everything we wanted to get out if this game tonight. Ryan Greene had a great game on the ground scoring twice, Sam Giordan got his first varsity touchdown, and the defense was great all night, pitching a shutout."

Prescott will be on the road again next week as the Badgers travel to play Cactus Shadows (2-0) at Cave Creek.

Combs (0-2) will make the trip to Prescott Valley to take on Bradshaw Mountain. The Bears lost 20-16 at Estrella Foothills.
