Saturday could not have been a more perfect day to be out in the sun for a run. Cross Country run that is. Schools from across the state of Arizona competed in the 41st annual Ray Wherley Invitational at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Prescott's best finish came from Simon Paige, who finished 3rd in the Boys seeded race with a time of 16:39.18. Other Badgers who finished in the top 50 were, 31st by Jordan Twombly-Ellis and 39th by Katie Townsend, in the girls seeded race. Gracie Strasser finished 44th in the girls open race. Austin Coyne finished 26th in the novice race. Cody Walker finished 33rd in the boys open race. Luke Armino finished 44th in the boys seeded race.
Race director and cross country coach Clark Tenney said, "That the meet has the boys and girls runners start together at the same time and place on the course and come back together at the end. The girls course is 2.5 miles and the boys is 3.1 miles. So what you end up seeing is a mix of boys and girls crossing the finish line."
At the end of the day Coach Tenney added, "Both our boys and girls teams had reasonably strong performances, with the girls finishing the top third of the 33 teams who fielded a Varsity squad, and the boys in the top half.
"I am pleased that both our boys and girls finished a strong 4th place among our 12 Division 2 teams today.
"We did have some runners who struggled a bit and who would like to have raced better, but we also had a few excellent performances among our PHS runners. I want to make particular mention of Jordan Twombly-Ellis and Simon Paige, who bested their times from last year by 15 and 16 seconds, respectively. Simon's 3rd place overall finish was especially impressive in the excellent field today, and represents his best cross country 5K ever. Newcomers Katie Townsend, and Kye and Rhen Davis also looked great today and posted season-best efforts."
