Prescott Badgers Head to Buckeye to Face the Roughriders

13 September 2013

The Prescott Badgers make their first road trip of the season as they travel to Buckeye to take on the Youngker Roughriders.

Youngker squeaked by in the opening week with a win over Independence 27-26, but were demolished last week at La Joya Community in Avondale 36-0.

The Roughriders are led by senior quarterback D’Angelo Calderon , 6-0 195. He has struggled through the first two games completing 9-29 and 99 yards, with one touchdown and 3 interceptions.

As for the ground game, the Roughriders are led by Austin Beanland-Kirk , 6-0 200 pound fullback , with 119 yards, 102 of those yard coming in the opening game. He was held to 17 yards on only 5 carries last week. Senior Joseph Mitchell 6-0 195, will be back after sitting out last week due to grades. He had 90 yards and a touchdown in the opening win. Having Mitchell back will improve the chances of Youngker greatly. Junior Clayton Self 5-9 165, is the go to guy for Calderon.

The defense is led by senior 6-1 250 pound defensive lineman Franze Farr. Corner Josh Cruz, 5-9 160, has 2 interceptions already this season.

The Prescott Badgers are still reeling after a tough loss at home to highly rated Desert Edge. Coach Cody Collett is anxious to get his team back on the field. Collett  said, “The kids came back to work, like they always do, and we had a really good week of practice.” In regards to playing Youngker, Collett added, “They are getting a couple of kids back that couldn’t play because of grades and I see them rejuvenated.”

The Badgers let the ball fly last week in an effort to open up the defense and take some of the pressure off of running back Kaine Bayze.  Bayze, averaging 200 plus yards a game, was slowed some through the first three quarters, but was able to dash 70 yards late in the game only for the Desert Edge defense to stop what would have been a tying two point conversion.

After two consecutive weeks of playing tough, physical teams, Collett said that “We have some bumps and bruises, but nothing to keep any of our kids out.”

The Badgers offense has accumulated 674 yards of total offense, along with 6 touchdowns, in the first two games.

Weather for tonight’s game is calling for mostly clear skies, temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, slowly cooling off as the game progresses. Kickoff at Youngker High School in Buckeye at 7pm.
