Badgers' Loss Means Waiting to Find Out About Playoffs

28 October 2012

Flag Day On Senior Night

The Badgers needed a win over the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions in order to secure a playoff spot. After tonights game, they will be lucky just to get in. The Lions came in at (4-5), but had played a stronger schedule than the Prescott.

The Badgers elected to kick off first and tried an onside kick which failed. The Mountain Lions got the ball at midfield but the Badgers defense stood tall forcing a punt. Prescott gave the ball back quickly on a Nick Rock pass intereception by Pono Ayers. That led to the first score of the game when Treshon Favors took the ball and scampered down the far side line to give Mountain Ridge the early lead 7-0.

The next series resulted in a turnover as well, when a fumble recovery set up the Mountain Lions again. Jacobi Taylor ran 32 yards giving the Lions a 14-0 lead. The Badgers seemed to have stopped the bleeding, but it was only momentary as Kaine Bayze made a good catch of a nicely thrown ball by Nick Rock to cut the lead in half to 14-7 near the end of the opening quarter.

The second quarter proved costly for the Badgers. Several big plays, including many penalties, and the ejection of Kaine Bayze. The officials ruled a blow to the head which ended the night for Bayze, and since he was tossed from the game, that means next week he will have to sit as well. When the dust finally settled on the first half, the Badgers found themselves in a 35-7 hole.

The Badgers were hoping to change some things in the third quarter but the penalty flags once again hurt the them. After a couple of unsuccessful drives, the Mountain Lions put the game away with a 56 yard pass completion to Bart Diehl from Ayers to make it 42-7 with 2:47 left in the 3rd quarter. Prescott responded quickly with a drive that was capped off with a 15 yard Nick Rock pass to Mengarelli with under a minute left in the quarter.

The Prescott offense struggled with Brady Mengarelli only managing 58 yards on the ground in 14 carries. He finshes the regular season with 1770 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. His pass reception tonight was his first of the season. Quarterback Nick Rock completed 12-23 for 161 yards and one touchdown, but two costly interceptions.

The fourth quarter was just a formality as both teams threatened, but could not score. As the game ended the band played while the faithful filed out of the stadium. The seniors ended the regular season with a bittersweet loss. As the team left the field, they held their heads up, for they accomplished a fine season under first year coach Cody Collett.

Prescott finishes the regular season at (7-3) and will wait to see if they make the first round of the playoffs. Despite winning last week at Kingman, the Badgers fell a spot to number 14 in the AIA Divsion II state power points poll. Mountain View ends the regular season at (5-5) but could very well claim that final playoff spot.
