Sandra Day O'Connor Eagles Stifle PHS Badgers

29 September 2012   Ron Williams

Prescott High School Badgers fall to the Sandra Day O'Connor Eagles on Friday night.

The Badgers took a healthy (4-1) record into last nights game at Sandra Day O'Connor. When the Badgers climbed on the homeward bus, they weren't in such good shape, as the Eagles stifled the Badgers in all areas of the game and handed Prescott a humbling 31-10 loss.

O’Connor came into the game at (1-4), but, they had played some other division I powers. The one common opponent was Boulder Creek. The Eagles lost 17-3, while the Badgers had lost 42-14.

The Eagles took the opening kickoff and moved right down the field and scored on a Tiger Scott 8 yard run to go up 7-0 with the crowd still trying to get settled in. The Badgers opening possession went 3 and out giving the ball back to the Eagles.

An interception by corner Eric Wright stopped the Eagles deep into Badgers territory to give the Badgers, and their fans, a sigh of relief. That ended shortly when the Badgers once again went 3 and out.

A pass interception and return from 4 yards out for a touchdown by Zach Kohler, early in the 2nd quarter, got the Badgers back into the game. Kohler added the extra point and the game was tied 7-7.

From there it was all Eagles. Tiger Scott bolted around the left end and scored on a 59 yard run to make it 13-7. A 2 point conversion made it 15-7 with just under 9 minutes to play in the 2nd quarter.

The Badgers gave the ball back to the Eagles as quarterback Nick Rock fumbled while trying to break a tackle. The defense rose to the occasion and held the Eagles to a 33 yard field goal by Alex Bohlman making it 18-7 at the 4:39 mark.

After the Badgers were unable to move the ball once again, the Eagles quickly scored on a pass from quarterback Jared Melson to Nick Ortega leaving the Badgers with a big hole to climb out of trailing 25-10 at the half.

The Badgers received the 2nd half kickoff and showed some life only having to punt the ball back to the Eagles.

An interception by Gunnar Wilken stopped the Eagles once again as the Badgers tried desperately to figure out what might work against a stingy Eagles defense.

The Badgers had their best drive of the night but had to settle for a Zach Kohler field goal cutting the deficit to 25-10.

The Badger defense which had been out on the field most of the night began to tire and  Melson connected with Ortega once again for a 21 yard strike making it 31-10 with just over 10 minutes to play.

The Eagles keyed on Brady Mengarelli and the defensive speed was quite evident as the Eagles were in his face as soon as the ball was in his hands.  Mengarelli ended up with only 33 yards on the ground as opposed to his record setting performance last week.

The Badgers will regroup and set out on another road trip this coming Friday when they travel to Goldwater.
