Drechsel leads GCU with 15 points and 14 rebounds

Grand Canyon University Lopes kept their perfect record at home intact with 71-57 win over the Seattle University Redhawks, in front of vivacious crowd of over 7,000. It was their seventh consecutive home win of this season.

A slow start was not anticipated, but it took a little over three minutes, for to score. Alessandro Lever knocked the first Lopes basket to tie the game at 3. Matt Jackson's reverse layup then tied the game at 5. Seattle went up 10-5 on baskets by Matej Kavas and Delante Jones 5:30 into the contest.

Grand Canyon trailed 15-9, but came to life behind the "encouragement" of GCU coach Dan Majerle. The Lopes went on a 17-2 run, 14 of those in a row over seven minutes off the clock. Leading GCU was Trey Drechsel, who scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half. Drechsel seemed to be everywhere, pulling down 14 rebounds.

The Lopes tied the game at 17 on a three point shot by Gerard Martin with 9:29 left in the first half. The Lopes first lead came with 8:47 on the clock, when Trey Drechsel cut through the lane for the layup.

The Redhawks were unable to get shots to fall and add to that some turnovers and spirited play by GCU, put the Lopes up 26-19 with 3:44 left in the first half.

Seattle came back to life to pull within one at 28-27 with just over a minute left. Dimari Milstead dropped in a pair of free throws. Myles Carter answered with two of his own, pull back within one at 30-29. Alessandro Lever took an inbounds pass with just a tick left on the clock to boost the lead to 32-29 at the half.

GCU held a 23-13 rebounds advantage, as both teams shot a tick above 40% from the floor.

Drechsel's back to back baskets to start the second half put the Lopes up 37-29. Another inside basket by Lever added to the lead. GCU held the Redhawks to three points to start the half. The lead grew to 43-32 prompting Seattle to call a timeout with 15:07 remaining.

GCU slowly added to that lead over the next four minutes. The Lopes increased their lead to 53-37 on a three by Michael Finke with 10:53 left.

Drechsel 's bucket made it 55-37 10:19 left. The lead continued to vary between 17 and 20 points.

When Carlos Johnson maneuvered his way for an inside bucket with 5:41 left, GCU had their biggest lead of the night at 63-42.

The Lopes did a great job moving the ball around to pick up their seventh consecutive home win.

GCU coach Dan Majerle said, "Very happy with our performance. When you hold that team to 33-34 % shooting, you had a great defensive night. We just need to keep playing like that, to keep that edge. Now we have to take this edge on the road."

The Lopes (2-0) in the WAC, and (9-6) overall, will travel on Thursday to play New Mexico State at 7pm. The television broadcast will be on Fox Sports Plus. Seattle drops to (0-2) and (12-5).
