The Roughrider baseball team dropped a conference doubleheader Friday afternoon in Phoenix at the hands of South Mountain Community College, 5-0 and 7-6. YC now falls to 9-7 overall and 0-2 in ACCAC action.
In the opener, the Roughrider offense managed only two hits both by centerfielder Trevor Edior.
Sloppy defense allowed for all five runs being unearned. YC committed 4 errors in the game. Hayden Durkiewicz pitched a fine game but took the hard luck loss. The sophomore lefty pitched 5.1 innings, scattered six hits and struck out 1 and allowed no earned runs.
In the second game, it came down to the last play, but the Green and Gold wound up on the wrong end of a 7-6. The game was tied at six with South Mountain batting in the bottom of the ninth when Jordan Rathbone homered to end the game.
Yavapai took an early lead in the second inning. Cory Wills drove in two when he tripled. YC tacked on three more runs in the top of the third, but the Cougars answered with three of their own in their half of the inning.
South Mountain took the lead with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Yavapai tied the game up in their half of the eighth inning when Carlos Viera singled home Cory Wills.
YC continues conference play on Tuesday, February 21st in Douglas against Cochise College. The doubleheader begins at 12:00 PM. Yavapai returns home on Wednesday, February 22nd hosting Thompson Rivers University at 12:00 PM.
