Sales, Menus & Recipes: The Bench Scraper—A Versatile Kitchen Tool

13 May 2020

A Bench Scraper? What’s that and why do I need it?

Do you have a Bench Scraper? If not, perhaps you should. It is a very simple tool, but one with many uses.

It started out as a baker’s tool, excellent for getting sticky doughs off wooden surfaces.  However, it has become one of the most commonly used items in both professional and home kitchens.

Using the Bench Scraper

There are many styles of bench scrapers, with all types of materials used for the handle. some of the most popular ones in the home kitchen have marks on the blade to help produce properly sized diced foods.

Among the many uses for the tool are: cleaning work surfaces; cutting butter into flour; cutting pastry or bread dough into even portions; cutting bar cookies and brownies into even sizes; chopping and transferring many types of vegetables and other ingredients. It can also be used to smoosh items such as garlic and cooked potatoes, score dough, and cut soft or semi soft cheese.

Bench Scrapers are not expensive, usually costing between $10 and $20. They are available at most stores selling kitchen gadgets and on Amazon.

Stores are beginning to have more sales and items on sale. Supply chain issues seem to be beginning to be resolved. Most now have toilet paper for sale, although hand sanitizer is still not plentiful. You might not be able to pick your favorite brand, however, although you will likely still be given a selection.
