The 19th Jazz Summit with concerts, jam sessions and workshops for student musicians arrives in Prescott this weekend.

Prescott celebrates the 19th Jazz Summit with concerts, jam sessions and workshops for student musicians. The three day event brings jazz musicians and fans from across the state to Prescott for a celebration America’s original art form.

The weekend kicks off Friday night at the Elks Theatre with a jazz concert, A Celebration of Jazz from New Orleans to New York. Mike Vax and the Great American Jazz Band will lead a musical journey from the early New Orleans Jazz of Louis Armstrong thru the unique styles and sounds of Kansas City, Memphis, Chicago and New York jazz and such legendary performers as Dizzy Gillespie, Pete Fountain, Jack Teagaden, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and many others.

Saturday will have a full day of performances at the Ruth Street Theater by the Bradshaw Mountain High School Jazz Ensemble, and the Prescott High School Jazz Ensemble followed by breakout sessions of clinics and workshops for student musicians. An evening concert by the Jazz Summit All-Star Big Band will follow at 7pm, and feature the Music of the Great Big Bands which will pay tribute to the music of Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Harry James, Glenn Miller, Count Basie and other legendary figures from the era of the Big Bands.

Sunday’s events will feature a Jazz Brunch and Evening All Star Jam Session at the Top of the Elks with food catered by El Gato Azul.
