729 Students Are Registered for the Week-Long Training

The fifteenth annual Arizona Wildfire & Incident Management Academy kicked off Saturday, March 11 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. About 729 students from 19 states are registered for the week-long training. Students have come from as far away as Maine, Florida, Michigan, and D.C.

At the Saturday morning briefing, Incident Management Team members encouraged students to challenge their instructors and absorb as much information as possible during their time at the academy.” Todd Abel, Incident Commander, said “The Academy provides a great opportunity to bring personnel from all agencies together in one setting. The formal and informal education that takes place this week helps develop and sustain relationships among professionals who will work together during real emergencies.”

In addition to providing quality courses, the Academy has established learning outside the classroom. Delivered daily, lessons learned within the wildland fire and incident management professions are used to facilitate discussions that carry outside the classrooms and into the field.

Over 9,000 students have received training at the Academy since its inception. All fifteen years of the Academy have been held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. This year, about $30,000 was donated to help provide scholarships to students.

The AWIMA mission is to develop professional and safe responses in the wildland environment by offering training and education that meets or exceeds National Wildfire Coordinating Group and FEMA standards. The Academy is an outstanding example of collaboration among local, state, and federal agencies for wildland fire and incident management training.

Tuesday night at the AZ Wildland and Incident Management Academy Tribute the Firefighter of the Year for the SW District will be awarded.
