Lady Badgers Volleyball Keeps the Train Rolling in Round #1 Win

04 November 2016

There’s a good reason the Lady Badgers are ranked #2.

PRESCOTT- The Prescott High School Volleyball team continued their regular season momentum into the playoffs on Wednesday as the Badgers swept the Pueblo Warriors in round one of the state playoffs at home.

“They played a good match tonight and did what they had to do to get the win,” said Badgers coach Josiah Ramirez.

The Badgers relied on their seniors for the victory as Ashlynn Uvila lead the team with nine kills, Alex Koehler added seven while Abbey Smith notched six and Keiana Vicente had five kills in the game. On the defensive side of the ball, Grace Hendricks led the team with eight digs while Smith came in second with five on the night.

“We are extremely excited right now,” said Smith following the victory. “We just have a lot of faith in ourselves that we can really go far.”

The victory means another home playoff game for the Badgers on Saturday where the team has played well during the season only losing one game on the home court.

“It’s absolutely huge to have this home court advantage so we are not traveling and having the fatigue of being on the bus, on the road,” Ramirez said. “It really helps getting here early and being able to just kind of relax and set the mood and get ready for our match here at home.”

The Badgers must now prepare for the Seton Catholic Sentinels who held a 22-10 (8-0 section) record during the regular season and beat Cottonwood 3-1 in round one of the playoffs on Wednesday night.

Ramirez mentioned the key for the team is to remain focused on the goal and not get comfortable.

“We got to make sure that we are having fun but also doing things right,” Ramirez said.

The Badgers will look to continue working toward the ultimate goal at home on Saturday in round two of the state playoffs against the Seton Catholic Sentinels with a 6:30pm match start time.
