On July 5, 2011, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office announced the identity of 13 suspects involved in ongoing sales of methamphetamine around Mayer and Cordes Lakes. The investigation was documented in a media release entitled “March on Meth,” and was handled by detectives from the Special Crimes Unit (SCU). Since that operation, detectives followed-up on leads resulting in the identification of 20 additional suspects involved not only in the sale of methamphetamine, but also heroin, cocaine and prescription medications. Communities in these new cases include Prescott Valley, Dewey/Humboldt, Mayer, Spring Valley, and Cordes Lakes.
History has shown that the efforts here will also have an impact in the reduction of drug driven crimes including identity theft, fraud, burglary and property theft.
Sheriff Mascher intends to make narcotic enforcement a priority utilizing SCU detectives and K9 teams along with ongoing efforts by patrol personnel. Because of this commitment, the Sheriff, with approval from the Partner’s Against Narcotics Trafficking (PANT) board, recently authorized the move of SCU detectives into PANT offices. Housing both specialized units together will allow for an ongoing exchange of intelligence and the ability to combine efforts on manpower intensive cases.
In a majority of the circumstances involving prescription medications sales, detectives learned suspects were obtaining their pills through State funded programs to resell. Any evidence of fraud in this respect was turned over to State authorities for further investigation involving those suspects.
