King & Queen Announced
Prescott High School students crowned their royalty at the halftime of the football game against Mohave last night. While the Badgers had things well at hand leading 42-0 at the break, the Pride of Prescott Band and Color Guard performed. Then came the big announcement.
All the nominees were introduced and walked across midfield to take their places on each side. The boys stood to the left, while the girls to the right. The tension prior to the announcement was seen in the faces of all the nominees. Finally, over the loud speakers, came the names of the winning students.
Peter Lewis and Naomi Worob, both Pride of Prescott Band students, were named as this years King and Queen. The crowd erupted with applause as the two winners joined each other at the 50 yard line. They each got into the green SUV chariot and made the lap around the track, waving and smiling in the process.
Lewis, a senior, plays in the percussion pit. Worob, who is also a senior, plays the flute.
The game ended with the Badgers winning 55-0. The homecoming dance followed, topping off a day of festivities that included a pep rally, skits, and the band, who marched and played through the halls to escort the students to the rally.
The Pride of Prescott Marching Band, was accompanied by members of the Granite Mountain Middle School, and Prescott Mile High Middle School bands, for their pregame show.
It was a day to remember for Prescott High School.
Homecoming Game 2013
Prescott decimates Mohave 55-0
Bayze 4 first half TDs
The Prescott Badgers knew they had to get the bad taste of last weeks loss to Flagstaff out of their mouths. By the end of the first quarter all was forgotten. The Badgers scored early and often in a 55-0 route over visiting Mohave Thunderbirds.
Mohave received the ball first but was forced to punt giving the Badgers their first opportunity. New quarterback Wil Kepner, on only his second pass, hit Kaine Bayze, who bolted down the near sideline for 67 yards and the first of his four first half touchdowns. Christian Fernandez added what would be the first of his many attempts making it 7-0, with 8:15 to go in the opening quarter.
The Thunderbird offense struggled the whole game, thanks to a tenacious Badgers defense, only making it across midfield twice. Running back Kyler White, was their offense, gaining 103 yards on 18 carries, with 55 of those yards coming on one carry.
Quarterback Dawson Rickets lived in fear of the Badger “D’ and was unable to do much of anything. The defensive line was in his backfield as much as his own running backs. At the end of the third quarter, the passing game still had negative yardage.
Meanwhile, the Badgers offense was running on all cylinders. Bayze capped off his night with two more first quarter touchdowns on runs from 24 and 20 yards. His fourth and final TD came in the second quarter on a 54 yard blast. Kepner, who finished 5-8, 98 yards, threw his second touchdown pass to Anthony Laureson from 19 yards out. When the dust settled for halftime, the Badgers led 42-0.
Prescott added two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Luke Roberts caught a 25 yard pass from Quenten Benner, increasing the score to 48-0.
Benner called his own number and weaved his way through the Thunderbird defense for a 57 yard touchdown run, making it 55-0.
The Badgers picked off three passes tonight. One each, by Norm Peterson, Chris Parker, and Ernie Roselle. This was Roselle’s third of the season. Tyler Bruso led the team with 8 tackles. David Rupp had a sack.
Bayze, who had four touchdowns, finished with 119 yards on only six carries, plus 67 yards on one reception. Chris Wright had 80 yards on eight carries. Benner had 64 yards on the ground. Justin Castro rushed for 36 yards.
Coach Cody Collett was pleased by his teams performance, ”I was happy with our tempo tonight and we did some good things. We got to play a lot of guys and I was pleased with our leadership, coaching our guys up in the second half.”
The Badgers (1-1), in the section, and (3-2) overall, will travel to Kingman next Friday to take on the Bulldogs. Mohave drops to (0-2), and (1-4).
