Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters formally Kicked off Bowl For Kids’ Sake 09 this week and last with a hum of activity and some quiet celebration. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the largest Campaign benefiting children in Yavapai County- and it is easy to join this winning team! The fund raising campaign begins now, and wraps up on February 28 & March, 1, 7, 8th with the best appreciation party in town!!
The first bowling balls were rolled out by “Littles”, boys and girls that are matched in Big Brothers Big Sisters program in the tri-city area, as a reminder that it’s time for individuals and local businesses, church groups, clubs and organizations to begin putting together their teams to help kids. Small gatherings were held across town to allow people to sign up their teams, now a cadre of volunteers is pounding the pavement trying to get companies, civic and faith based groups to “Cowboy up” and help kids by forming their own teams: Each team of 5 people asks others for pledges, tries to get over $125 in pledges per person and for their efforts YBBBS host an awesome party with free bowling, free Pizza Hut Pizza, Free Coke, and PRIZES AND FUN FOR ALL!!
Team captain packets can be picked up at any Big Brothers Big Sisters location in Yavapai County, or by calling 928-778-5135. This year, teams and individuals can also sign up to bowl by going to http://Yavapaibowlforkids.kintera.org and signing up online. Individuals can also make donations to YBBBS Bowl For Kids at the same web address.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is an annual campaign benefiting Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters, the county’s premiere youth mentoring organization. All proceeds raised are used locally to match children on the organization’s waiting list with a Big Brother, Big Sister, Senior Big, Family or a Big in School.
Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters was founded over 38 years ago and is ranked among the nation’s top Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies. Today, YBBBS supports over 600 active Big/Little matches. Yet there are over 250 children on the organization’s “waiting list” to be matched with a BIG. It costs $1,000 to make and support one match annually including volunteer recruitment and enrollment and match support and supervision. The agency’s goal is to pair 1,000 children with a “Big” in Yavapai County and Sedona. Research proves that after being matched with a “Big” for just 18 months, children in Big Brothers Big Sisters program are less likely to get in trouble with law enforcement or be involved in violence and less likely to begin using drugs and alcohol. Their school attendance rate increases and their grades significantly improve.
So remember, it’s not about bowling. It’s about helping kids –and having FUN!
