Over 100 “Littles” and Bigs got a special peak into Embry Riddle Aeronautic University and Aviation at the University’s “Aviation Day” benefiting Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The 6th annual Aviation Day is a chance for ERAU to show off their stuff to the next generation of students, and open doors of possibilities for at risk youth.
We had about 130 Littles and their Bigs registered to attend this great “hands on” and FREE event. Big Brothers and Big Sisters were invited to bring their “Littles” and share a new experience, exploring the world of possibilities a future in aviation offers. The ERAU Flight Team members were matched with about 20 children in the YBBBS program who do not yet have Bigs. YBBBS has about 210 children waiting for Bigs right now! “This event serves as a great way to show our children what their future could hold, as well as introduce the idea of mentoring to a group of motivated, successful, college students.” Explained Dave Seigler, VP of Community Relations for YBBBS. “With over 200 children waiting, we need opportunities like these to showcase our program to various groups.”
The event included special activities on the ERAU Flight Line, 4 stations were created: 2 simulators, a “hands on” helicopter tour, Aircraft Displays, and the “build your own air-racer” station where participants used skill and creativity to craft planes made of… “Paper”… of all things…
“While the simulators and the other stations were all awesome, the activity isn’t as important as simply spending time together.” said Stacey, whose son is matched with a Big. “My son gets so much from his Big; support, encouragement, guidance. He looks forward to every time they get together.”
