It's the Annual Gala for 'Reigning Cats & Dogs'

11 August 2011   Missy Paschke-Wood

Yavapai Humane Society Benefit set for Aug. 27

Invitations are arriving in mailboxes all over the quad-city area. Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) is throwing their Annual Gala Dinner and Auction on Saturday, Aug. 27 at The Prescott Resort. The theme will be “Reigning Cats & Dogs.”

“Donna Sturgis, one of our very creative volunteers, suggested the theme when the gala committee was brainstorming a concept that could follow the YHS gala from year to year,” said Missy Paschke-Wood, YHS marketing and development director. “Reigning Cats & Dogs won hands down.”

The event will feature a silent auction and cocktail hour in the Granite Mountain Room where attendees can watch the sun set over the Bradshaw Mountains, followed by a sumptuous plated dinner with wine in Prescott Resort’s Goldwater Ballroom. Master of Ceremonies Bo Woods, the morning DJ for Fun Oldies 1450, agreed to serve as master of ceremonies, and Jersey Lilly Saloon owner and auctioneer Tommy Meredith will command the live auction over dessert. Both gentlemen are generously donating their time and expertise.

Many local businesses have come forward to lend their support. Olsen’s Grain and Hooligan’s Pub have taken the two exclusive champion sponsorships. Wakeman Funeral Home, Whisker’s Barkery, National Bank of Arizona, Invisible Fence, Jebco Building Systems, Weber’s Insurance, The Prescott Dog and The Alarm Connection have also agreed to sponsor Yavapai Humane Society this year.

One of YHS’ loyal dog walkers, Kristin Goddard, used her connections to secure a truly exciting raffle grand prize, a five-night stay at the famous Tivoli Lodge in Vail, Colo. The stay is valid for summer and fall of 2012.

Raffle tickets are quickly disappearing from Whiskers Barkery, Olsen’s Grain in Prescott, the YHS Spay/Neuter Clinic, YHS Thrift Shop, and, of course, the main shelter of Yavapai Humane Society. Second and third prize are a foursome of golf at Prescott Lakes and a $100 gift certificate to Hassayampa Canine Resort & Spa, respectively. The tickets cost $5 each or $20 for five tickets. The drawing will be held at Reigning Cats & Dogs but the winner does not need to be present to win.

The silent and live auctions feature items obtained locally and nationally. “We are thrilled with the number and variety of auction items we’ve been able to obtain this year,” said Board President Gloria Hershman, who was able to secure autographed items from the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

In addition to a multitude of other vacations, including trips to Paris; Alberta, Canada; Cancun, Mexico; and St. Kitts, attendees can also bid on a dogfight experience in a military fighter jet, a Los Angeles trip with a $1,000 Bloomingdale shopping spree and a seven-night Alaskan cruise.

“For the first time, we’re offering our live and silent auction items online before the event. It will officially open on Aug. 15, but people can preview the items right now,” said Cheryl Moreno, YHS volunteer and auction organizer.  “Bidders can even bid by proxy if they can’t be at Reigning Cats & Dogs in person, and some items even have a “Buy It Now” price.” Links to the online auction can be found at www.yavapaihumane.org.

Other one-of-a-kind items include an at-home dinner party for 10 at 129½: An American Jazz Grille, Diamondback box seats and a chance to be a guest DJ with Leza on MAGIC 99.1. Many art pieces will be available, including a horse bronze by I.Bonheur and paintings from local galleries. Quilts, performing arts event tickets, high-end jewelry and dozens of gift certificates to car services, restaurants, and salons will also be auctioned.

Tickets to Reigning Cats & Dogs are $75 each or $700 for a table of 10. Tickets can be purchased by calling (928) 445-2666 or bought online at www.yavapaihumane.org. Sponsorships are still being accepted. Contact donate@yavapaihumane.org for more information.

The Yavapai Humane Society has been serving Yavapai County’s citizens and animals since 1972. YHS has a shelter in Prescott, a Cat Adoption Center in PetSmart, a Thrift Shop and a separate spay/neuter clinic offering low-cost spay/neuters and low-cost vaccinations.  In July of 2010, we adopted a “no-kill” ethic which has led to a 68% decrease in euthanasia.
