Start your own business - but be prepared!

 As exciting as it is to be the founder of your own business, remember that being your own boss is more than the freedom of running around in your skivvies in the middle of the afternoon. Running a business is work — a lot of it — and you need to make sure that you know what to expect as a CEO. Business first, skivvies later.

Marketing

You can’t generate new clients without letting them know that you exist first, right? Use a variety of marketing strategies to drum up new clientele.

  • Enlist the services of a digital marketing agency. The professionals at these agencies know how to use Google to drive more traffic to your website.

  • Pass out flyers. It’s an old-school method, but there’s a reason it still exists today: It works! List your company, your logo and contact information.

  • Check out Facebook ads to help you get more traffic to your website. Catering to specific audiences, Facebook ads reach far and wide to the people you want to be frequenting your business.

Planning

If you have no business plan, you are in trouble. A business plan is the most important thing you can do when you’re in the infant stages of planning your company. In short, it outlines your goals and steps you plan to take to achieve them.

  • Start with a summary. What is your company? What does it do, why do people want to use your services?

  • Where will you get the startup cash? How will you make money? How much will you charge clients in order to make a profit?

  • Where do you want to be in a month? A year? Five years from now? About 80% of businesses fail within the first year, how will you avoid being in that statistic?

Research

Understand the concept of supply and demand. If a product or service is in high demand, your company can supply that product or service to the masses.

  • What kind of service are you offering, and is it in high enough demand that you can make a living off of it?

  • Who needs this service? Who is your target audience?

  • What’s the competition like? Are there a lot of other small businesses nearby that offer the same services? What sets you apart?

Know the realities of hard work and full steam ahead. It’s a long journey, but your dream of running your own business is so close.
