Suspect in Chino Valley Officer Involved Shooting Identified

The suspect has been identified as Martin Louis Avena from Paulden.

The suspect  from yesterday’s armed confrontation with law enforcement officers is identified as 70-year-old Martin Louis Avena from Paulden. He remains in critical condition at a Phoenix area hospital. DPS investigators are handling the shooting investigation for both the Chino Valley Police Department and Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. They remained on scene until early this morning.

According to the original police report, a male suspect had been sought by deputies regarding an earlier domestic violence incident on Friday afternoon that occurred earlier in the Paulden area. 

The deputies were told that the suspect was armed and had threatened any law enforcement officers that might respond to the incident. 

When the suspect’s vehicle was located and stopped in Chino Valley , the suspect confronted the deputies and officers with a firearm. Avena was shot as a result of the treat by officers from both the Chino Valley Police Department and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. 

No officers were were injured during the event. 

The investigation is being conducted by the Department of Pubic Safety’s Officer Involved Shooting Team. 

The standard policy is for the names of both officers to be withheld for at least 48 hours after the incident.
